A camp-oven evening near Kununurra

Arriving for the camp-oven evening.

After the busy weeks on the Gibb River Road, Kununurra was a welcome place to slow down. A regional promotion offering help with the cost of tours also made a special evening possible: the Gourmet Camp Oven Experience.

From the bus pickup to the cooking, hosting and music, the evening was remarkably well looked after. Much of the food was prepared with hot coals and camp ovens, which made watching it come together part of the experience rather than simply a wait for dinner.

The setting helped too. The rock behind us warmed in the evening light, tables were laid out beneath the open sky, and the pace allowed us to enjoy where we were as well as what was on the plate.

There was music during the main course, good food throughout and a lovely sense of being somewhere special for the evening. A very different kind of camp dinner from our usual routine, and one we will remember.
