Gambells Rest: glow worms and a wombat welcome

We have started our journey around Australia, and Gambells Rest made a very agreeable first stop. About two hours out of Sydney, near Bundanoon in Morton National Park, it gave us bushland, hot showers and a great camp kitchen.
We visited the wombat statue, then headed down towards Glow Worm Glen around sunset and waited for darkness. Those small lights are made by the larvae of fungus gnats, which use their glow to attract prey. Quite an elaborate way to arrange dinner.
The last photo contains plenty of glow worms, although the experience was considerably easier to appreciate in person. On the walk back we met a real wombat, looking rather more surprised by the encounter than its stone counterpart.
A good campsite, a night walk and our first wildlife meeting. The trip was under way.
