Ellenbrae's scones were one of them. We stopped in its green oasis for scones and cream, with birds in the trees and a rather more comfortable place to sit than the vehicle. An excellent interval in a bumpy day.
The Pentecost crossing became another milestone towards the end of this part of the road. The river and the Cockburn Range made a striking setting, and we found a beautiful camp up high with the view to ourselves.
After the cheerful bustle of the school-holiday camps, that little patch of solitude felt especially good. The river also brought our first proper encounters with the local crocodiles. We were happy to appreciate those at a distance.
