A first look into Wolfe Creek Crater

Looking across Wolfe Creek Crater from the rim.

Wolfe Creek Crater was worth the drive in. The road still asked a bit of us, although after Purnululu it felt like a comparatively restrained performance.

Looking across Wolfe Creek Crater from the rim.

From the rim, the shape is remarkably clear: a great circular hollow in an otherwise open landscape. The impact is thought to have happened around 120,000 years ago, leaving a feature that still looks unmistakably like the result of something arriving from space at speed.

The vegetation inside the crater adds another contrast. From the edge you can see how different the floor looks from the country around it, a small world held within the rim.
