Hutt Lagoon: a pink lake that delivered

Shan matching the colours at Hutt Lagoon.

We finally found a pink lake that was properly pink. Hutt Lagoon more than met the brief, with the water shifting between pale rose and deeper pink against the white salt and blue sky.

Shan was dressed to match (though this could have been coincidence). Her floral pink outfit was doing an unusually good job of blending into the scenery, which made for a rather cheerful set of photos.

The colour comes from microscopic algae producing beta-carotene, the pigment also found in carrots. It is cultivated here for commercial uses, including food colouring. A much more interesting explanation than someone having been overgenerous with the saturation slider.

We were travelling with friends, and it was lovely to share the discovery. The cracked salt, odd colours and open space gave everyone plenty to look at, before another evening back at camp.
