Onto the Gibb River Road: gorges, pools and long pauses

We were on the Gibb River Road, heading from Derby towards Kununurra, and every day seemed to bring another gorge to explore.
At Tunnel Creek we walked through a dark, flooded cave. It was quite a change from the open road: enclosed rock, water underfoot and a torch doing the work that the sun had been handling outside.
Bell Gorge had a very different scale. The rock shelves, pools and waterfall gave us plenty to explore and plenty of reasons to linger. Galvans Gorge proved even harder to leave: we spent most of a day there, watching people arrive, swim, enjoy the place and head off again while we stayed put.
The small details were keeping us just as occupied as the swimming holes. There were flowers, insects, a lizard and rock art among the larger landscapes. The drive was linking the stops together, but it was the time away from the vehicle that made this part of the Gibb so rewarding.
We have left the photos as a fairly generous gallery. Each gorge had its own character, and choosing one image to stand for the lot would have missed most of the pleasure.
