The Pinnacles, from sunset to morning

Morning light across the Pinnacles.

Our first stop after Perth was the Pinnacles. We arrived around sunset to a surprisingly busy drive through the limestone formations, with the moonrise adding another reason to linger.

Moving among the limestone formations.

We camped nearby and returned in the morning. Seeing them twice was worth it: different light, different shadows and more time to notice how varied the shapes are. Some look like weathered pillars, others like broken pieces of a much larger structure, all standing in that bright yellow sand.

The story of how the Pinnacles formed is still being investigated. The displays introduced competing explanations involving the limestone, soils and the influence of plants. We liked that the place could be so distinctive and still leave scientists with questions to work on.

A good place to restart the journey north, with both ends of the day accounted for.
