The Twelve Apostles in a restless sea

Limestone stacks against the grey sea.

Overcast skies and a rough ocean suited the Twelve Apostles. The limestone stacks stood out against the grey weather, with lines of white water wrapping around their bases and spreading across the beach.

The sea was doing most of the moving, but the rock tells a much longer version of the same story. These stacks are pieces of the old coastline, left standing as waves and weather wore away the surrounding limestone. Looking at the water working around them made that process very easy to imagine.

We took plenty of photos of the textures: foam, sand, darker water and the layers in the cliffs. A blue sky would have made a different picture, but this was a good day for watching the coast in action.
