The Loop at Kalbarri, with friends and a few extra guests

We spent a day walking the Loop trail in Kalbarri National Park with good friends. It takes you along the rim of the Murchison River gorge, with views into the side canyons, before bringing you down to the river itself.
The change in perspective was part of the pleasure. From above, the river traces a line through the sandstone; down below, the rock walls and ledges become much bigger, more immediate things. Some sections called for careful feet and a little scrambling.
There was plenty of evidence of recent flooding along the river. Branches and debris had been left well above the water we were seeing, giving some idea of how different the gorge must look when it is running hard.
The sandstone, the views and the company made for a beautiful walk. The flies also came along in substantial numbers, although their contribution to the conversation was limited.
